Who is flying BVLOS?

Postby Captain Jibberjabber » Wed Sep 02, 2015 1:02 pm

So who is flying BVLOS in the Australian civilian world? & what type of RPA, training, approval/endorsements are needed past the point of IREX theory? Night VFR for RPA? I am thinking something like coast guard would be utilising the capability but who is flying their OC with BVLOS? 8)

A number of civilian operators have had one-off BVLOS approvals thus far. Guidance from CASA is that for a UOC Holder to be approved for BVLOS, a very strong safety case would be required. At the moment those conditions include things like, only in rural and remote areas, over specified property, Controller in Command is also a Command Instrument rated pilot, significant control and communications equipment etc etc etc. I am working with CASA in the initial stages only of how this might be approved. We need to make sure all BVLOS ops coming up are both safe and successful.
